RE: We Added Our Solar and Wind Generator To Our Off Grid House

Thanks everyone,
S. Sullivan- we decided to go off grid one because the electric is really far away and two because Mike has never done this before. We like to try new things.
8.1 Van- thanks for the link. We love to see what others have done.

We Added Our Solar and Wind Generator To Our Off Grid House

We are moving along in building our off grid house. Today I posted the story and pictures about our solar set up. If anyone is interested check out Chapter 10 at:

Norcold Propane Use And Electric Use?

We have a 4 door Norcold on our motorhome and we are running on propane(we have no electric right now). We are building an off grid home and we need to buy a propane refrigerator. I found one that uses 1.7 gallons of propane per week, it is not an RV refrigerator.
Can anyone tell me the propane usage on the larger Norcolds? Propane and electric? I was wondering if the Norcold might be better.
Thank You,
Lisa

Energy and Propane Usage For A Norcold?

We have a 4 door Norcold in our motorhome and I was wondering if anyone knows
1. How much electric do these use? KWH per year?
and
2. How much propane do they use?
We are building an off grid home and I need a propane refrigerator. I found one I like and it uses 1.7 gallons of propane a week. I don't know how this compares with an RV refrigerator.
Any help would be appreciated. And it doesn't have to be a Norcold but it has to be big and stainless in color.
Thank You,
Lisa

RE: We Are Going Off The Grid In TN

Hiker3- I'm sure there are a lot of people interested in camping out. We might rent out our old place(the one with our motorhome on it now).
Minkhill- Yeah I've seen hundreds of barns just like that. Where are you from?
MatthewB- Congrats on you energy conservation. We are not "going green" never claimed to. Just trying to conserve our "electric usage" because we will not be connected to the grid. Most people started going off grid long before "going green" became popular.
For anyone interested
I will be posting the first part of chapter 6 with more pictures tonight. Check it out at the City-Data forums in the TN section.

RE: We Are Going Off The Grid In TN

lesmore- thank you for the compliments.
JTMO- We can't sell power back in Tn. And you need a huge and very costly system to do that. We just want enough power for ourselves. We also have no incentives or rebates in TN for doing this.
Dshultz- I'm gald you are enjoying.
I also just posted the end of chapter 5 with more pictures. You can see them at:

We Are Going Off The Grid In TN

My husband and I are building a berm(earth covered on 3 sides) solar and wind generated house in the TN mountains. We will have no electric except what we produce. My husband will be designing our system and it will be very people friendly.
We have been fulltimers for over 3 years but now we want to make sure we have a safehaven for the future.
If anyone is interested I am posting the story with pictures on another forum. You can see our story at:

I hope you enjoy

RE: washser/dryer

We have a residential Whirlpool stack washer and dryer on 220 volt. We used to have a splendide and it was garbage. The drum is so tiny so you can only do small loads. It also goes directly from washing to drying(which takes forever) and then your clothes come out all wrinkled. The last year I had the Splendide, I didn't use the dryer and had to hang clothes all over the mh so they wouldn't be wrinkled. Pretty much the splendide will do in a pinch but IMO it's a boat anchor.
Get a real washer and dryer and you will be much happier.

RE: Is exposed rust normal on a 1 year old coach?

Our coach is 4 years old and although rust(visable) is not a problem we do repair every year. We have had rust on some of the compartment doors, interior, and also our steps.
We just sand them down, tape off, and paint. Our job seems to last longer tha the factory job.

RE: Newmar Grand Star, Beware

Never heard of a problem like this even on the Newmar forum I run, but then it's for mid engine and DP's, but I have a few gas owners too. I suspect it's the Power Gear levelers as most DP's come with HWH.
I'm not a big fan of Power Gear either.
BTW: you should be contacting Newmar about the trouble first before posting complaints on any forum. These forums are open to ANYONE that wants to read them and Newmar does monitor some of them. You'll get far more co-operation by them if you use honey rather than vinegar!
It may be nothing to do with the MH itself and my just be an adjustment to the levelers, you're taking one repair places word that there's a problem with the whole line and I've never heard of a problem like yours with ANY Newmar. Not saying it hasn't/doesn't happen, just haven't seen it.
On edit:
Maybe you should change the title to "Power Gear Levelers, Beware"
The OP said he liked his coach and was just stating a problem. He didn't sound bitter about it so why shouldn't he post it. So what if Newmwar, or anyone else, monitors these posts. Maybe if more people told the truth there wouldn't be so many problems with motorhomes in general.
We hear it all the time. Ask someone, Do you like your coach? Answer: We love it. Do you have any problems? No. it's great. Then slide in-How is your service department? If they answer then you know they have lied.

POSTING PICTURES

Help. I got my first digital camera yesterday and I am trying to learn all I can. I have no idea how to post my pics on a forum and add text to the pics.
Please explain the easiest way to post my pics with descriptions. I don't like the pics that you have to open another site to see. What are the different ways to post pics?
Thanks for all your help,
Lisa
